Gareth Southgate: England manager and former player
Early life and career
Gareth Southgate was born on 3 September 1970 in Watford, Hertfordshire. He began his football career with Crystal Palace before moving to Aston Villa in 1995. He went on to play for Middlesbrough, Southampton and England.
International career
Southgate made his England debut in 1995 and went on to win 57 caps for his country. He was a member of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championships and the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup.
Managerial career
After retiring from playing, Southgate became manager of Middlesbrough in 2006. He led the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2006 and the FA Cup final in 2008. He left Middlesbrough in 2009 and became manager of the England under-21 team in 2013. In November 2016, Southgate was appointed as England manager. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of the 2020 European Championships.
