WASHINGTON (AP) — A driver died late Saturday after a vehicle slammed into a gate at the White House, authorities said, with a preliminary investigation indicating the crash was accidental.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed through a security gate at the White House complex, according to the U.S. Secret Service. The driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Secret Service said there was no indication that the incident was related to terrorism and that the investigation is ongoing.
The White House complex is heavily guarded by the Secret Service, and access is restricted to authorized personnel. The crash occurred at a gate on the north side of the complex, near the Ellipse.
The incident comes after a series of security breaches at the White House in recent years, including a 2014 incident in which a man scaled the White House fence and entered the East Room.
In the wake of Saturday's crash, the Secret Service said it is reviewing its security measures at the White House complex.
