Newcastle beat Chelsea 1-0

Anthony Gordon's second-half strike gives Newcastle victory

Eddie Howe's side move up to third in the Premier League table

Newcastle United moved up to third in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at St James' Park on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute, capitalizing on a mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The win was Newcastle's fourth in a row and moved them to within two points of second-placed Manchester City.

Chelsea, meanwhile, dropped to eighth in the table after suffering their third defeat in their last four games.

Newcastle started the game brightly and had the first chance of the match when Miguel Almirón fired wide from the edge of the area.

Chelsea gradually grew into the game and had a good chance to take the lead when Raheem Sterling found himself in space inside the area, but he could only shoot straight at Nick Pope.

Newcastle took the lead against the run of play when Gordon pounced on a loose pass from Arrizabalaga and fired home from close range.

Chelsea pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but Newcastle defended resolutely and held on for a vital three points.

The win was a major boost for Newcastle's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and will give them confidence ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

For Chelsea, the defeat was a setback in their bid to finish in the top four and will increase the pressure on manager Graham Potter.
